Common name: PACKARD'S GRASSHOPPER.
Size: 21-40 mm or more.
General distribution: West of Mississippi River.
Distribution in New Mexico: Statewide.
Habitat: Grassland, open woodland.
Host: Herbaceous dicots, especially legumes; grasses, forbs, blue grama grass, cotton, vegetables.
Adults Present: July-October.
Notes: Male cerci narrowed in middle; pronotum with distinct pale stripe on each side; hind tibiae green or red; tegmina longer than abdomen. Differs from M. foedus in being slightly smaller and distinctly colored, and in details of the aedeagus. Can be destructive.
