Common name: DIFFERENTIAL GRASSHOPPER.
Size: 28-44 mm.
General distribution: Widespread from California and Oregon to New Jersey and Texas.
Distribution in New Mexico: Statewide.
Habitat: Grassland, urban areas, mostly weedy areas.
Host: Crop plants, grasses.
Adults Present: July-October.
Notes: A very large member of the genus with distinctive black chevrons on hind femora; male cerci wide, somewhat boot-like; color yellow, hind tibiae yellow; pronotal sutures usually outlined in black, otherwise unmarked; tegmina long. A non-migratory but often destructive species, especially in corn, alfalfa, and garden vegetables.
