General distribution: Kansas and Colorado, S. through New Mexico and Texas to N. Mexico.
Distribution in New Mexico: Eastern half of state and Hidalgo county.
Habitat: Grassland.
Host: In captivity, will eat many dicots, avoiding grass species; cannibalistic.
Adults Present: June-October.
Notes: Large band-winged grasshopper with red or orange hind tibiae; band on hind wing without spur. Differs from H. trifasciatus in having base of inner hind femora red. No crepitation. Not economically important.
