Hydrophobicity of Basidiomycetes as a Factor in Soil Structure

The following is a MSU (Montana State University)/ARS (Ag Research Service) Cooperative research project.

Photograph of fungus with the right one exhibiting a hydrophobic surface as indicated by the rounded bead of water (high contact angle).  Whereas the ascomycetous species fungus on the left if much less hydrophobic, indicated by the relative flatness of the bead (low contact angle).
