Common name: VELVET STRIPED GRASSHOPPER.
Size: 16-24 mm.
General distribution: S. central Canada, E. to Connecticut and S. to New Mexico.
Distribution in New Mexico: Widespread, especially in east.
Habitat: Grassland.
Host: Grasses.
Adults Present: April-July.
Notes: Small, gray, brown, or green, slant-faced grasshopper with lateral pronotal ridges compressed in the middle as seen from above (Opeia obscura has parallel ridges); tegmina as long or longer than abdomen. Can be a rangeland pest.
