Common name: HIGH PLAINS GRASSHOPPER.
Size: 40-60 mm.
General distribution: Central United States, from South Dakota to Texas and New Mexico.
Distribution in New Mexico: Eastern half of state.
Habitat: High plains, mostly sand hills.
Host: Grasses; in outbreak years also corn, sorghum, millet, alfalfa, etc.
Adults Present: July-September.
Notes: Similar to D. carolina, except black on hind wings not as extensive, with border ivory or clear and tip spotted; tegmina spotted. Crepitation not noticeable. Can be a pest of crops.
