Size: 27-38 mm.
General distribution: SW and S. central Canada, S. to New Mexico, Arizona, and California.
Distribution in New Mexico: Bernalillo, Colfax, Los Alamos, McKinley, Otero, Rio Arriba, Taos, Sandoval, San Miguel.
Habitat: Mountain grassland.
Host: Range grasses.
Adults Present: May-September.
Notes: Large band-wing grasshopper with lateral lobes of pronotum wider ventrally; spots on tegmina not as distinct as in Xanthippus; hind tibiae red, orange, or yellow, with proximal one-fourth white. No crepitation. Not economically important.
