Size: 29-46 mm.
General distribution: SW Canada, S. to Nevada and Colorado.
Distribution in New Mexico: No definite record, but should occur along the Colorado border.
Habitat: Open dry prairies, bare ground on slopes.
Host: Easily reared on grasses; possibly feeds on some forbs.
Adults Present: July-August.
Notes: Identified by color or pattern of hind wings, transparent or black basal area. Makes extremely loud buzzing sound in flight; buzzing may be continuous or interrupted. Not economically important.
