Common name: LUBBER GRASSHOPPER
Size: 38-79 mm.
General distribution: Montana to Minnesota, S. to Mexico.
Distribution in New Mexico: Eastern to southwestern two-thirds of state.
Habitat: Grassland.
Host: Compositae, including lettuce; Malvaceae, including cotton. Also consume many other species of forbs, as well as carrion, etc.; cannibalistic.
Adults Present: June-October.
Notes: A very large, flightless grasshopper; tegmina reduced, pink with black spots. Commonly seen crossing highways. Occassional pests of crops, but not of rangeland.
