Alpine Grasshopper

Melanoplus alpinus Scudder

Melanoplus alpinus is found at mid to high elevations in the mountains of Wyoming. It is especially common in forest meadows from 7,000 to 10,000 feet. It has been reported from the Black Hills but was not found there in this survey despite numerous collections. Eggs overwinter in the soil and adults are present in July and August. Its feeding preference is not well documented, but it is probably a mixed feeder preferring grasses. Because of its limited habitat, by itself it is not considered an economically damaging species.
