Chloealtis conspersa, the sprinkled grasshopper, is common in
small forest openings and low brush in the Black Hills. It may also occur
in the Big Horn and Medicine Bow Mountains. Eggs are usually laid in soft
wood on the ground but occasionally are laid in soil or dry dung. Eggs
overwinter and hatch in the spring. Adults are present from mid July to
September. They feed on grasses and are known to prefer blue grass. Their
preference for wooded areas prevents them from competing for rangeland
forage.
