Amphitornus coloradus, the striped grasshopper, is common on
the rangelands of Wyoming. Its preferred habitat is the mixedgrass and
shortgrass prairies of eastern Wyoming. There are several different color
forms in Wyoming that can make identification confusing. After overwintering
in the soil, eggs hatch early in the spring. Adults are present from late
June to September. This species feeds on many of the valuable forage grasses
in Wyoming and in conjunction with other grass-feeding grasshoppers, it
can cause severe forage losses.
